The real difference
Both support 10 Gbps, but Cat6 only does it to about 55 meters and only in favorable conditions. Cat6a is specified for 10 Gbps to the full 100 meters and has tighter alien-crosstalk control. Cat6a is also thicker, less flexible, and needs more pathway space — that is where the extra cost lives.
Where Cat6a earns its money
Access point drops, camera drops delivering PoE++ power, conference room AV-over-IP, and any riser or backbone copper. Heat dissipation matters here: higher-wattage PoE runs warmer, and Cat6a handles it better in bundled trays.
- Wi-Fi 6E / Wi-Fi 7 access points
- PoE++ (60W–90W) devices: PTZ cameras, displays, LED lighting
- AV-over-IP and high-density conference rooms
- Any drop you do not want to re-pull within 10 years
The honest cost view
Cat6a typically adds roughly 20–40% to material and some labor per drop. On a full building that is real money. A common, defensible approach is Cat6 for standard workstation drops and Cat6a for AP, camera and AV drops — you spend the upgrade where it changes performance.
