5 Signs Your Business Network Needs an Upgrade
Is your business network holding you back? Here are 5 warning signs that your network infrastructure needs an upgrade — and what to do about each one.
5 Signs Your Business Network Needs an Upgrade
Your business network is like plumbing — you don't think about it until something goes wrong. But unlike a burst pipe, network problems creep in slowly. Calls drop. Files take forever to upload. The Wi-Fi is "slow again." By the time you notice, productivity has already suffered.
Here are five warning signs that your network infrastructure needs attention, and what to do about each one.
1. Frequent Disconnections and Dropped Calls
If your VoIP calls drop, video conferences freeze, or devices regularly disconnect from Wi-Fi, your network is struggling. Common causes include:
- Aging switches that can't handle current traffic loads
- Cat5 cabling that doesn't support modern bandwidth requirements
- Overloaded wireless access points with too many connected devices
- Lack of Quality of Service (QoS) settings prioritizing voice and video traffic
Fix: A network assessment identifies bottlenecks. Often, upgrading switches and adding QoS policies resolves call quality issues immediately.
2. Your Cabling Is Cat5 or Cat5e
Cat5 cabling (max 100Mbps) was installed in buildings built before 2005. Cat5e (max 1Gbps) was standard through the mid-2010s. Neither supports the 10Gbps speeds that modern applications increasingly require.
If your building has Cat5 or aging Cat5e cabling, you're running modern cars on dirt roads.
Fix: Upgrade to Cat6 or Cat6a cabling. While disruptive, a re-cable project pays dividends for 15-25 years. Phase the upgrade by starting with the most critical areas — server rooms, executive offices, and conference rooms.
3. You've Added Cloud Services Without Upgrading Bandwidth
Every cloud application — Microsoft 365, Salesforce, cloud backups, VoIP — adds bandwidth demand. If you've moved to the cloud without upgrading your ISP connection or internal network, you're creating a bottleneck.
Fix: Audit your bandwidth usage. Ensure your ISP connection matches your needs (most businesses need 100Mbps-1Gbps dedicated). Then verify your internal switches and cabling can handle the throughput.
4. Your Wi-Fi Has Dead Zones
Consumer-grade wireless routers and outdated access points create inconsistent coverage. Signs include:
- Conference rooms where video calls always fail
- Areas where phones disconnect from Wi-Fi and use cellular
- Slow speeds at the far end of the office
- Guest complaints about Wi-Fi reliability
Fix: Deploy enterprise-grade access points with proper coverage planning. A professional wireless survey maps signal strength throughout your space and identifies optimal AP placement.
5. You're Planning to Add People, Devices, or Locations
Growth exposes network weaknesses. Adding 20 employees to a network designed for 50 creates problems. Opening a second location requires secure connectivity between sites. Deploying IoT devices (cameras, sensors, smart building systems) adds dozens of new network endpoints.
Fix: Plan network infrastructure ahead of growth. It's far cheaper to install additional capacity during a planned upgrade than to retrofit after problems emerge.
